GROUTING IN CONJUNCTION WITH VIBRATED BEAM INSTALLATION

Jet grouting replaces the Vibrated Beam Method in installing an impermeable barrier when the alignment of the wall crosses either underground (utilities and pipelines) or surface (railroad crossings, low overhead electrical lines, and pipelines) services. When these services which are vital to the operation of the existing facility cannot be temporarily disconnected and re-routed or permanently removed, then jet grouting is a viable solution. Jet grouting is also employed when large obstacles interfere with the Vibrated Beam installation.

The X-panel method or rotation method of jet grouting is often used in conjunction with the Vibrated Beam installation. The X-panel is a process by which slurry is injected with directional control, without the use of rotation, to form a series of interconnected slurry panels. In this process, the slurry used is identical to that used with the Vibrated Beam Method and is mixed in the same batchplant. Generally, the jet grouted wall is installed in advance of the Vibrated Beam wall and consequently, the Vibrated Beam wall will tie into that of the jet grouted wall.

GROUTING IN CONJUNCTION WITH SHEET PILE INSTALLATION

Slurry Systems, Inc. has the experience to install either a grouted or non-grouted sheet pile wall. When installing a grouted wall, Slurry Systems, Inc. uses its expertise as a licensed Waterloo® installer. The Waterloo® barrier is constructed of steel sheet piling and sealable joints. The Waterloo® barrier provides both impermeability (based on the sealed joints) and structural support. An ideal application of such a wall would be where both an impermeable barrier is desired and excavation adjacent to the barrier is needed. Additional commercial applications include isolation of accidental spills, cofferdams for dewatering and funneling contaminated plumes.

The features and benefits of the Waterloo® barrier include: rapid installation & sealing, easy removal where applications are temporary, easy to inspect and monitor, and long service life for permanent installations. Potential leak paths through the Waterloo® barrier are limited to the sealed joints and therefore the joints are the focus of the quality control procedures. It is required that the pile driving and sealing be carried out by or under the supervision of the licensed personnel such as Slurry Systems, Inc.
